First VFF run in the books.

Ok, so after 4 months of running and trolling this site for two weeks, I bought my VFF Bikilas. Earlier today, I decided to take it easy and run on the treadmill at the gym. After 3 miles and running slightly faster than I usually do, there seems to be nothing out of the usual. I'm making the transition from Nike Free Run 2, so hopefully I'll be able to ease my way into the full switch. My first half marathon is coming up at the end of the month, so if it feels right I just might have to do it in my Bikilas. :)

  • Take it easy with your transition to VFFs.  There's considerably less cushioning between the VFFs and your Nike Frees.  Many folks on this site, including myself, have gotten injured from doing too much too soon.  It might be better to do the half in your Frees and then gradually transition to the VFFs after your race.
  • Yes, you'll definitely want to slow down. Just starting out in minimalist footwear it will take you a number of months before you'll be ready to run a half in your Bikilas. Best advice is what jmijares suggested and run the half in your frees and start really slow transitioning to VFFs. You don't want a TMTS injury that stops you from running for a couple weeks, or worse.
  • Thanks guys. Yeah, my calves were a bit more tense than usual after the VFF run. Luckily, I'm listening to my body and will take the advice on running the half in my frees. I can tell that muscle is going to be growing after each outing with the VFFs. I'm stoked.
  • Glad to hear you can take good advice. Your body is never going to lead you astray (it doesn't want to be injured). Stay with your training regimin and make the slow transition. Maybe by the time you're ready for a full marathon you can do it in your Bikilas!! Good luck on the start of your journey
  • Hey. This is my first post. I ran 2.11 miles in my komodosport ls yesterday and my calves and Achilles tendon are screaming today. I love them! The only thing is that there is an odd pain around my left foot 4the toe (next to pinky). Any suggestions?

Welcome to the club!  We are drinking the Kool-Aid!  Yeah, large gastrocnemius (calf) is a great by-product of natural running.  I may have some marshmallow around the middle, but look at those calfs!!!  Have fun!

take it easy, too much too soon is not that good, for now, my physician would say: rest a bit

Yes, one must rest.  I second this advice, and the transition advice given above.
