Soft Star questions

I'm considering getting a pair, and have narrowed my choices down to the original RunAmoc or the Rambler.  My primary uses would be running and hiking in cold weather, especially while it's raining or wet out.  I really, REALLY like the idea of the sheepskin footbed in the Rambler, but am concerned about the durability and traction of the sole.  To me they look like the soles on my original Lunas, which just don't cut it on some of the steeper hikes that I do (I've tried, and been really glad I had my Treks as a backup).  But then the "trail" soles on the RunAmoc don't like like they'd provide all that much traction on really rough trails, either.  Does anyone have experience hiking in either of these models?

Also, what is sizing like?  I see that they come in different widths, but then it also sounds like the toe box is wide to start with.  I AM more comfortable with men's VFFs...the women's styles with closed tops, such as the Treks, are too narrow for me.  Does that mean I should get the wide?

  • I have a pair of the RunAmoc Originals and the Dash Lite.  The toebox is very roomy in both of them.  I wear a size 8 mens shoe and the regular width for the RunAmoc Dash Lite is 4".  They can do a wide size or a narrow size depending on your measurements.  I'd definitely email them or give them a call.  They're very quick to respond to emails during the work week and can answer all of your questions.

As for traction, I don't have the trail soles on my RunAmocs, but the street sole has unusually good grip, probably better than my Bikila LSs.  I'll often lose traction in my Bikila LSs running across wet steel construction plates in the places were I run, but the RunAmocs are very grippy on that surface.  I'm not sure why, but I've done enough runs in the rain and on wet surfaces to notice the difference.

One thing about the original RunAmoc though is that they feel floppy.  If you like a slightly snug fit, it might be better to go with the Dash.
  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll definitely give them a call before placing an order!

Have you taken your RunAmocs on trails?  When I said traction, I was thinking more of steep hillsides covered in dirt or scree.  I've been on a couple of hikes where I was actually slipping downhill in my Lunas. :P
  • I've run with them on simple trails, but nothing like what you might be dealing with, especially anything steep...  :o

BirthdayShoes member Britt actually did a review of the Original RunAmocs with the trail sole earlier this year:

  • I have been contemplating the Dash RunAmoc smooth for work for a while now. I also have my eye on the Grippy Roo for casual wear (or even work!)

From what I can tell they run true-to-size? I also think it's great they can customize colors for you for not much more than the original price.

These very well may be my next minimalist purchase. Have they ever had a sale before?
  • I like the Dash a lot!  It reminds me of my KSOs, which I can't use for running any more due to my mutant wide feet.  (The upper mesh on the the KSOs and other VFFs squeeze the top of my foot when I run, so I have to use the LS models.)  The RunAmocs have great ground feel and super light weight.  I think the only thing lighter in weight might be the Moc3, which I also have.

Softstar had a sale in October on the Dash.  I'm hoping they have another sale in the near future because I'd like to get the trail sole as well.

I have mutant feet too...my forefeet kind of splay out and look a little like duck feet.  I'm not complaining - I'd rather have them healthy than deformed by narrow shoes, but it does make shoe-buying tricky.  Did you get the normal width in the Dash?  Just based on the photos I've seen, it looks like the toe box is a little narrower than the other Soft Stars.

Yup, I got the normal width on the DASH.  It fits perfectly for me and the leather feels like a glove, very similar to mens VFF Mocs.  For a mens size 8A, the Dash narrow width is about 3.5".  The normal width fits a foot that is 3.75" to 4".  I didn't ask about the wide width.  Initially I thought that the toe box was narrower as well, but when you look straight down on them, they look nice and roomy.  Part of it might have to do with the suppleness of the leather and when the shoe is laced the roomy-ness of the toe box is a little better to see.

Yer right, they did. Damn me for not taking advantage!

I do like the Trail sole a lot but I'll be wearing these at work on concrete floors so I'm gonna opt for the Street one (5mm vs 2mm).

Everyone at work is amazed how I can work in the shoes I wear (all minimalist - vb neos, saucony hattori, stems, nb minimus trail, merrell pace glove), with having no arch support, no cushioning, and not have my feet hurt at the end of the day!
